Note: VW recommend that operation of the
brake pressure regulator is checked by one of
their garages at the same interval that the disc
pads and rear brake linings are checked for
wear
Brake pads
1 Both front and rear brake pad lining wear
can be checked by viewing through a hole in
the wheel rim (see illustration). Use a mirror
placed on the inside of the wheel. The use of a
torch may also be necessary.

2 If pad thickness is less than the minimum amount specified, renew the pads as a set.
Rear brake shoes
3 Jack up the rear of the vehicle and support
it on axle stands (see “Jacking and vehicle
support”). Chock the front wheels.
4 Working beneath the vehicle, remove the rubber plugs from the front of the backplates and check with a torch that the linings are not worn below the minimum thickness specified.
On completion, refit the plugs.
